The indigenous peoples of Europe are the focus of European ethnology, the field of anthropology related to the various indigenous groups that reside in the nations of Europe. Groups may be defined by common genetic ancestry, common language, or both.
As European Ethnology works from a historical-ethnological perspective, it also studies the dynamics of, for instance, emotions, material heritage and religious culture in the past. ACEE is based at the Meertens Institute, which researches everyday language and culture in the Netherlands.
The Bachelor’s Programme European Ethnology prepares graduates for a wide range of occupational fields, such as in documentation, collecting, museums and exhibitions, libraries and publishing, public relations, cultural journalism, adult education, developmental work, cultural policy and administration, tourism as well as intercultural social work and cultural management.
